What Is Cataract Surgery?
As people get older, one of the most common eye problems that develops is the occurrence of cataracts or cloudy areas of the eye that can lead to obstructed vision. Cataract surgery addresses this problem by removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL). At Pennsylvania Surgery and Laser Center, our ophthalmologists perform both traditional and advanced cataract surgery for patients from Philadelphia, PA and all over the state. Using either a fine scalpel or our facility's advanced femtosecond laser, we can make a precise incision in the eye, removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a premium IOL. If you are experiencing cloudy or blurred vision, or if your eyes feel more sensitive to bright lights than normal, we invite you to schedule a consultation at Pennsylvania Surgery and Laser Center to learn about your options for cataract surgery.
How Does Cataract Surgery Work?
While some people might feel squeamish about eye procedures, both traditional and laser cataract surgery are considered safe treatments. We perform cataract surgery on-site at our Philadelphia, PA surgical center. First, we'll numb one or both of your eyes using either drops or an injection. Once you're ready, we'll make a small incision using either a precise blade or a femtosecond laser. The clouded lens will be broken up using gentle ultrasonic waves before we remove it. A premium IOL will then be inserted, and the incision will be closed. The entire procedure takes roughly 10 – 15 minutes per eye.
Pennsylvania Surgery and Laser Center also performs refractive lens exchange (RLE) using the same procedure. Unlike cataract surgery, which is solely intended for patients with advanced cataracts, RLE is generally performed for patients over the age of 40 who want to reduce their dependence on glasses or contacts to be able to see clearly. As a side benefit, patients who undergo RLE eliminate their risk of developing cataracts later in life.
